After the first months of the year, in which original pieces by the architect preserved in the Palace itself were exhibited, April marks the incorporation of new works from the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia.

These models, currently on display in a prominent space on the second floor, will be moved in May to the main floor, where they will remain until the closing of the Gaudí Year.

On this occasion, the public will be able to contemplate for the first time in Astorga two exceptional pieces from the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, the result of a collaboration agreement established between the two institutions. This loan marks the beginning of a series of pieces that will be unveiled over the coming months from the masterpiece of the architect from Reus.

Víctor Murias, director of the Palace, and Alfonso Nistal, curator of the temporary exhibition.

The first of the works is the Model of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia (scale 1:400), made in 2025 by the Taller de Modelistas de la Sagrada Familia in polyamide PA11 and acrylic paint. This piece allows us to understand at a glance the complexity of one of the most ambitious projects in contemporary architecture. From its origins, when the bookseller Josep Maria Bocabella promoted the construction of an expiatory temple paid for by donations, until Gaudi’s arrival in 1883, the basilica was transformed into a deeply personal work.

For more than four decades, Gaudí developed a constantly evolving project, aware that he would not see his work completed. The model on display reflects this total architectural thought: a basilica plan with a Latin cross, a system of towers with a parabolic structure and an interior conceived as a stone forest, where light, nature and symbolism form a true visual catechesis. The basilica thus stands as a “Bible in stone”, a synthesis of faith, technology and observation of nature.

The exhibition is completed by a model of a pinnacle of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, made of plaster molded by the same workshop. This piece reproduces one of the finishes of the Nativity façade, the only one that Gaudí saw practically completed. The episcopal symbols crowning the towers stand out, elements that are echoed in the Episcopal Palace of Astorga, where the architect designed angels carrying the cross, the crosier and the mitre.

The Nativity façade, built between 1894 and 1930, is an exaltation of life and divine creation, with an organic and naturalistic language that connects directly with Gaudí’s ideas. Its orientation to the east reinforces this symbolism, associating the birth of Christ with the light of dawn.

With this Piece of the Month, the Museum of the Roads invites you to rediscover the figure of Gaudí from an intimate and didactic perspective, putting in dialogue two of his creative universes: that of Barcelona and that of Astorga. A unique opportunity to delve into the creative process of one of the most influential architects in history and understand the symbolic depth of his work.

The Museum of the Ways of Gaudí Palace presents this Wednesday the Piece of the Month of April, which is part of the special program dedicated to Antonio Gaudí on the occasion of the centenary of his death.
