Catholic bishop and saint, whose life and legends have been depicted frequently in art. After leaving the militia in which he began, he focused his life on evangelization and prayer, especially in the rural world.

This panel represents the saint lying on his bed, in a room occupied by his disciples at the moment when a vision occurs in a dream according to which Jesus Christ, with a golden nimbus, is there, pointing to the cloak on his shoulders and saying: “Martin, while still a catechumen, covered me with this garment”.

A modest work in technical terms, full of spatial imperfections with chaotic architecture, stereotyped characters and the use, among other archaisms, of gold. The detail that the author seeks in the fabrics, objects and jewelry shows an interest in a realism that, due to its shortcomings, he does not achieve. The catalog of the Asturian diocesan painting until the so-called Master of Astorga takes center stage, does not offer outstanding artists or productions, being this series of panels from the church of Requejo, one more example of modest authors, with technical deficiencies that carry out commissions for parishes with limited economic possibilities.

The Gaudí Palace begins November with winter opening hours and can be visited from Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm and in the afternoons from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

The Museum of the Ways of the Gaudí Palace presents as November’s Piece of the Month an anonymous panel recounting the life of Saint Martin of Tours, from Requejo (León) dating from 1500.
