The polychrome wood carving is on display throughout this month in a prominent place on the second floor of the monument.

The Marian iconographic repertoire has the Virgin and Child as the representation that has enjoyed the greatest fortune over the centuries. The unequivocal doctrinal intention of medieval sacred art is materialized in this iconography, which is the plastic representation of the Incarnation of the Word.

Thus, this carving shows us the Virgin Mary as the throne of the King, in a majestic role, wearing tunic, mantle and veil, this one of marked symbolic character, without crowning since it was probably re-crowned. He presents his mutilated right hand, in which he would carry the apple as New Eve or perhaps the cosmic sphere enveloping the Child with the other hand. Her face shows kindness, just like that of a Baby Jesus who sits on her lap blessing with his right hand and although today lost, showing with the other the Book of Life.

Detail of the sweetened face of the 12th century polychrome carving. This detail gives a glimpse of its post-Romanesque evolution.

The piece, from the diocesan region of La Cabrera, was conceived to be exhibited for worship, as only the front is carved, with the back slightly roughed. The figures show all the frontality and rigidity of this period, but the softening of their expressions allow us to glimpse their later evolution towards the humanization of the scene, overcoming the severity of the Romanesque.

At the end of May, the piece will be moved, but will remain until the end of the year along with the rest of the works exhibited in the coming months. The Gaudí Palace inaugurates this month its summer schedule and can be visited from Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 14:00 hours and in the afternoons from 16:00 to 20:00 hours.

The Museum of the Ways of the Gaudí Palace presents as ‘Piece of the Month’ for May a 13th century Virgin and Child from Quintanilla de Losada, in the diocesan region of La Cabrera.
