One of its results is ivory carving, which is carried out in the Philippines by Chinese residents (Sangleyes).

This carving of St. Sebastian is a response to models made by local carvers who used prints to represent Christ, the Virgin Mary or martyr saints such as this example.

St. Sebastian, a Roman centurion martyred in the 3rd century AD. He was assaulted and beaten for not renouncing his faith. He became one of the great protectors against the plague in the Middle Ages. From then on he is represented half-naked, young and beardless, with his hands tied to a trunk, wounded and expiring, with arrows that lacerate his entire anatomy.
It is a sculpture of bulk, accentuated by the curved shape of the tusk. It is covered with a tight cloth to a well-resolved and marked anatomy in extremities and rib cage. Long and fine hair with wavy locks, the face, with a sharp nose and certain orientalizing features that denote its origin, looks up.

This type of work was highly appreciated for the material used and its exquisite technical finish, and was destined for temples, religious orders and private oratories.

At the end of this month of March, the piece will be moved, but will remain until the end of the year on the second floor along with the rest of the works that have been exhibited and will be exhibited during this year 2025. The Gaudí Palace can be visited from Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm and in the afternoons from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

The Museum of the Ways of the Gaudí Palace presents as ‘Piece of the Month’ for March a polychrome ivory carving of Saint Sebastian dating from the 18th century.

[173
176,177
post-9038","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-museum-of-the-roads","tag-piece-of-the-month
["GET
