The exhibition will be inaugurated on June 12 by His Majesty King Felipe VI.

Hospitalitas is a term with Greek roots and Latin roots that the exhibition addresses from the primitive concept of solidarity, as it has been transferred and evolved to the present day. Through the chapters that make up the exhibition, articulated through works by the best artists in the history of Spanish art, we approach hospitality, which is also one of the hallmarks of both Villafranca del Bierzo, located in the middle of the French Way of St. James, and Santiago de Compostela, the final destination of the pilgrims on their way to the tomb of the Apostle.

These pieces, selected for their historical and artistic relevance, are:

– Triple Saint Anne: From the old Hospital de las Cinco Llagas, this carving of approximately 1400 stands out for its workmanship and iconographic concept. The three figures that compose it represent the earthly genealogy of the Savior, glorifying Saint Anne as mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus. This work is an exceptional example of religious art from the 15th century onwards.

– Reliquary Bust: Attributed to Brussels for characteristics such as the wide face, slanted eyes and prominent chin, this reliquary bust arrived in Spain after Charles V’s trip to Belgium in 1520, after his coronation as emperor. Originally from the Collegiate Church of Villafranca del Bierzo, this bust is a significant piece of European religious devotion and history.

– Montealegre Capital: Dated to the beginning of the 13th century, this Romanesque capital, together with its pair also exhibited in the Museo de los Caminos, comes from the disappeared Monastery of San Juan de Montealegre in Villagatón. In 1203, the monastery became a hospice of the Hospitaller Order under the invocation of San Juan. This piece reflects the artistic and spiritual transition of medieval times.

– Votive ara-stele: This granite piece, dedicated to Jupiter, comes from San Andrés de Montejos (León) and is dated to the 2nd century AD. The ara-estela is believed to be linked to the castro or castellum of Queledino, possibly referring to Quilós, in El Bierzo, where a Celtic castro and Roman gold mines are located. This artifact is a remarkable representation of the Roman influence in the region and of the religious practices of the time.

The Museum of the Ways of Gaudí Palace is honored to contribute to the Ages of Man 2024 exhibition, giving visitors the opportunity to appreciate the cultural and historical richness of these masterpieces from the Diocese of Astorga.

The Museum of the Ways of the Palace of Gaudí cedes four of its pieces for the prestigious exhibition “Hospitalitas” of Las Edades del Hombre, which this year will be held in Villafranca del Bierzo and Santiago de Compostela.
