The central square shows a cartouche with the monogram IHS and from it hangs the Crucified in gilded silver. In the decoration of the quatrefoils, the magnificent image of the Pelican feeding the chicks with its blood stands out, a clear analogy with the giving of the blood of Christ. The reverse is ornamentally similar, with a central square representing the Annunciation of Mary and the quatrefoils with the image of the four evangelists.

The base, with a smooth barrel, has a hexagonal section with two bodies with facades of venerated niches separated by hermes and six free sculptures of apostles in the lower one and another six in the upper one separated by small columns.

Except for the use of the quatrefoils, attached to the Gothic style, it is a fully Renaissance work, made in Astorga, being Sebastián de Encalada the most likely goldsmith who made it. Active in the Asturicense diocese between 1558 and 1583, his work is very influenced by the great project of Gaspar Becerra in the main altarpiece of the Cathedral of Astorga.

At the end of this month of March, the piece will be moved, but will remain until the end of the year on the second floor along with the rest of the works that have been exhibited and will be exhibited during this year 2024. The Gaudí Palace is open from Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm and in the afternoons from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

The Museum of the Ways of the Palace of Gaudí presents as ‘Piece of the month’ of March a processional cross made in silver in its color that dates from 1568 and comes from Busnadiego (León).

[173
176,177
post-9085","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-museum-of-the-roads","tag-piece-of-the-month
["GET
