This July, the iconographic proposal comes from another of the rooms on the first floor of the Gaudí Palace.

Room 1 of the museum, entitled “Remote Christian origins” shows one of the highest quality works of its collection, which corresponds to the variant of Santiago pilgrim praying before the Virgin of Pilar, of uncertain provenance and part of the funds of the institution since 1966, when it was acquired by purchase of the antiquarian market.

This Santiago genuflexo, with joined hands and which may have been carved in the second third of the 18th century, is the piece proposed for this month of July and to close the Santiago theme in this extended Jacobean Holy Year. The Virgen del Pilar, which undoubtedly formed part of this traditional set, did not reach the museum.
Stylistically it seems to be related to José Gambino, a sculptor from Compostela who is characterized by the delicacy of the finishes and the elegant attitude of his works. Kneeling, he seems to have lost his staff and hat and wears a tunic and a cape with his classic and distinctive scallops, and his belt is attached to his anatomy, from which hangs a pouch.

His face, full of naturalism, raises his gaze towards the disappeared Virgin of Pilar. Bearded and with wavy hair, defining characteristics of Gambino, a notable sculptor who has to his credit an abundant production of pieces on the theme of St. James.

The origin of the piece, uncertain, could be related to a Benedictine monastery of the Asturian diocese or perhaps the private chapel of a noble house.

Its chronology coincides with a moment of effervescence of the Jacobean iconography, of which the Museum of the Ways has pieces as outstanding as this one. The Gaudí Palace is open every day from 10:00 to 14:00 in the mornings and from 16:00 to 20:00 in the afternoons.

The Museum of the Ways of the Palace of Gaudí closes this July 25, St. James Day, its proposal to show the santiaguista phenomenon in the Diocese of Astorga with the proposal of a piece dedicated to St. James pilgrim.

[173
176,177,208
post-9138","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-museum-of-the-roads","tag-piece-of-the-month","tag-the-road-to-santiago
["GET
