It presents the pilgrim Saint James with his classic attributes, namely the staff, tilted on his left arm, a wide-brimmed hat with a scallop in its central part and ample clothing, splendidly modeled, which are signs of identity of Flemish or Burgundian masters who spread these models along the Camino de Santiago or even worked in those areas creating their own workshops in them.

The face, serene, shows a dense and abundant beard that falls symmetrically blending with his long hair. The distinctive feature of this carving is that the apostle is also reading, as he carries a book, on this occasion open, which conveys his facet as a disciple of Christ and disseminator of His word.

The Turcia sculpture can be dated to the first years of the 16th century. Its authorship has not been documented to date, although it has been proposed on some occasions that it is close to Alejo de Vahía, who worked for the bishopric of Oviedo when this area on the banks of the Órbigo River where Turcia is located belonged to that diocese.

It seems correct, in the absence of documents to support such a claim of authorship, to look for the execution of this carving in an artist close to those workshops and Nordic aesthetics that are documented in the area of the Asturian diocese.

It is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable sculptural works of the Jacobean collection of the Museo de los Caminos and comes from the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady of Turcia (León).

Each month the new “piece of the month” is unveiled on the 25th, coinciding with the feast dedicated to St. James, July 25. Illustrious pilgrims along with other anonymous ones, the presence of the Jacobean in legends and written texts are an inherent part of Astorga and in this Jacobean Year the Museum of the Ways dedicates its “piece of the month” to the works of St. James preserved in the permanent collection on display.

Coinciding with the feast of St. James, July 25, the Palace this Sunday the commemorative piece for the patron saint’s day: Santiago pilgrim of Turcia.

[173
215,176,177,214,208
post-9156","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-jacobean-holy-year","tag-museum-of-the-roads","tag-piece-of-the-month","tag-santiago-peregrino","tag-the-road-to-santiago
["GET
