The figure is represented as a pilgrim on horseback, iconography that is the common thread of the Provisorato, the room that the Museum of the Roads in the Palace of Gaudí is dedicated to the Santiaguista phenomenon in the Diocese of Astorga.

The sculpture is composed of two pieces -rider and horse- that can be separated. Santiago el Mayor is represented wearing a pilgrim’s hat on which is visible in relief the usual shell in his iconography. He is covered with a cloak and carries in his left hand a Jacobean pilgrim’s staff-standard, while he raises his right hand, in which, most likely, he originally wielded a sword as a symbol of combat. Because of its clothing, the saddle and the horse’s harness, the work dates from the first decades of the 17th century. It also retains traces of its first polychrome, although it has been repainted on several occasions.

The interest of this piece is more in its simplicity, ingenuity and popular charm than in the merits of the anonymous sculptor. Of undetermined origin to date, it was incorporated into the permanent collection of the Museo de los Caminos in 1965. Like all the works of Jacobean iconography in the museum collections of the Gaudí Palace, it is exhibited in the Provisorato room and can be found in a showcase located in the center of the room.

On May 1, the Gaudí Palace reopened its doors to the public, always keeping all security measures in place. The monument and the Museum of the Ways can be visited on Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00.

The Gaudí Palace presents the piece of the month of May which, coinciding with the Jacobean Year, has the figure of Santiago as its central theme.

[173
176,177,211,216,208
post-9175","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-museum-of-the-roads","tag-piece-of-the-month","tag-provisional","tag-santiago","tag-the-road-to-santiago
["GET
