Its name comes from the fact that the city is a crossroads, the most prominent of which is the Camino de Santiago.

The Museum has a room specially dedicated to the phenomenon of St. James in the Diocese and therefore, during the coming months, the Gaudí Palace will present some of the pieces related to the Jacobean that are in the permanent exhibition of the museum.

Each month the new “piece of the month” will be unveiled on the 25th, coinciding with the feast dedicated to St. James, July 25. Although so far no date has been set for the reopening of the monument, the Gaudí Palace wants to present, in this Jacobean Year, some of the most important pieces of the Provisorato, the room dedicated to the Camino de Santiago.

Illustrious pilgrims together with other anonymous ones, the presence of the Jacobean in legends and written texts are an inherent part of Astorga.

This month of January, we inaugurate with this sculpture of Santiago pilgrim. A piece made of polychrome wood from the seventeenth century from Labaniego (León) and presiding over the Provisorato room in the Museo de los Caminos. An anonymous work that has been recently restored by the team of Proceso Arte8 and framed within the project of the Palace of Gaudí for the recovery of pieces of the Museum.

The attributes that characterize this image are those typical of the santiaguista tradition. In one hand he carries the Book of the Scriptures, which relates him to his evangelizing role, and in the other the staff and the gourd. On his head, a wide-brimmed hat folded and decorated with the scallop.

One of the most curious details of this Santiago is precisely in the book that he carries in his left hand. During its restoration, the date 1694 appeared on its pages, which gives an indication of the date of creation of this carving.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the Jacobean Year, the Gaudí Palace has decided to inaugurate the project ‘The Piece of the Month’.

[173
230,177,208
post-9179","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-jacobean-year","tag-piece-of-the-month","tag-the-road-to-santiago
["GET
