The Museum of the Ways of the Gaudí Palace presents again the project ‘The Piece of the Month’, which was dedicated in 2021 and 2022 to the Jacobean Holy Year. Starting this February, a piece from the museum collection will be exhibited every month on the second floor of the Gaudí Palace.
At the beginning of the month, the new “piece of the month” will be unveiled and will be exhibited on the top floor of the monument along with an informative sign in Spanish and English. At the end of the month, the piece will be moved, but will remain until the end of the year along with the rest of the works exhibited in the coming months.
This month of February opens with a chalice from Castrotierra de la Valduerna dated 1569. A chalice with a flared and smooth cup, with a circular incision in the upper area and sub-cup delicately decorated with an openwork piece crowned with cresting, geometric and vegetal motifs inserting heads of angels and full-length children.
The piece is attributed to Sebastián de Encalada, an author of great quality as a goldsmith, and makes this piece a masterpiece of Asturian silverware of the late Renaissance.
In 1964 the Museum of the Ways was opened to the public, an initiative of Bishop Marcelo Gonzalez Martin, which collects pieces from different periods and artistic styles of the Diocese of Astorga. There is not room for all the pieces in the rooms of the Gaudí Palace, so this initiative will show both pieces belonging to the permanent collection of the museum, as well as pieces that are not usually on display to highlight the artistic quality present in the Diocese of Astorga.
The Gaudí Palace is open from Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm and in the afternoons from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
