The Museum of the Ways of the Gaudí Palace presents as ‘Piece of the Month’ for September a fragment of Roman mosaic from the Villa located in the pago de los Villares, in Quintana del Marco (León) which will be exhibited throughout the month of September in a prominent place on the second floor of the Gaudí Palace.
The mosaic was a decorative element for architectural spaces of the first order for the Romans, although it already existed in the Greek and Mesopotamian world before.
Made with the Opus Tessellatum technique, it is decorated with the swastika system formed by listels and a braid of two strands between them, in white, black, red and ochre. This design, widespread in Hispania and the rest of Europe, recalls the theme of the labyrinth, since in a mosaic of Hippo Regius (present-day Algeria) the Minotaur is represented with this theme.
At the end of the month the piece will move, but will remain, along with those of previous months, until the end of the year. The Gaudí Palace can be visited from Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 14:00 hours and in the afternoons from 16:00 to 20:00 hours.
