Following the approval of the Territorial Heritage Commission last October, the Gaudí Palace in Astorga has started this week the works to improve the roof of the monument in Astorga. “The palaces are finished through the roof and that is what we are doing. The last “great work” that remained to be done after the whole process of restoration and rehabilitation of the same. Since work had been done on the interior and exterior walls, the old roof needed to be replaced because, although it was being maintained, the deterioration it was suffering made it necessary to carry out a more thorough work. We must not forget that it was in 1913 when it was done and that the passing of the years leaves its mark on these buildings”, explains the director of the monument, Víctor Murias Borrajo.
The works, which will last for four months -predictably until February-, will not affect the usual course of visits or the opening of the Gaudí Palace, which since November 1 has begun the winter schedule, that is, in the mornings from 10:30 to 14:00 hours and in the afternoons from 16:00 to 18:30 hours.
The work to be carried out will consist of removing the slate slabs and lead linings from the crowning, installing new slabs of the same dimensions and characteristics, as well as repairing the weather vanes that crown the towers. The same actions will be carried out on the main roof and, in addition, the replacement of the existing shingles and ridge tiles with profiles of similar elements with natural zinc sheets placed by means of seaming and ventilated ridge tiles will be carried out. In addition, the bird proofing system will also be replaced.
The Palace will set aside an area for the first phase of work and a second area for the second phase, which will not affect the normal flow of visitors.
